Boca Raton, Fla. - A pair of freshmen soccer players that have made their mark on the pitch this fall have received the Florida Atlantic University Athletic Department's Student-Athlete of the Week award following impressive team-leading performances this past weekend.
Men's soccer player Lukas Simons scored two goals to help the Owls compile a 1-0-1 record for the weekend, including a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin on Sunday after battling to a 1-1 draw on Friday against Georgia State University. The freshman from Miami scored the game-winning goal against the Badgers and tallied a second-half goal that forced a draw in Friday's match. That goal was the first of his collegiate career. Simons' two scores have resulted from three shots on goal for the season -- a team-best .750 goal-per-shot percentage. Also, both of his goals have come off the bench this fall.
Meanwhile, women's soccer player Jesse Shugg paced the Owls' offensive attack in its two games in the Hurricane Cup tournament at the University of Miami last weekend. The Burlington, Ontario native scored her first career goal in Friday's match against North Dakota State University. She attempted a game-high seven shots in that match. Shugg's goal early in the second half gave FAU its first lead of the season. She came back to have a team-best two shots against West Virginia University, a perennial NCAA tournament competitor. For the season, Shugg leads the team with 18 shots and eight shots on goal. She has started five of the team's six matches this fall.
Redshirt senior football player Rob Housler was also nominated for the male Student-Athlete of the Week award after leading FAU with seven receptions for 75 yards in last Saturday's 30-17 loss to Michigan State University in Detroit.
More FAU athletes get into the swing this week as the men's tennis team begins its fall schedule by participating in the University of Florida Invitational, beginning on Thursday, September 16. The women's soccer team will host Fordham University on Sunday, September 19 at noon at the FAU Soccer Stadium. The volleyball squad will travel to Tampa to participate in the USF tournament, starting on Friday, September 17. Learn more about FAU athletics at www.fausports.com.
