BOCA RATON, FL (Sept. 12, 2010) - Lukas Simons capped off an outstanding weekend with a game-winning goal as the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team upended Wisconsin 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
"We were thinking about moving him from defender to forward all preseason long," said head coach Kos Donev. "We moved him there on Friday night and he scored on his first chance and he put in a big goal for us today."
The true freshman's second goal in as many games proved to be enough as the Owls (1-2-1) were able to kill the final five minutes of the game to earn their first victory of the 2010 season.
Sunday's winner for the versatile Simons came after Wisconsin goalkeeper Ryan Vint bobbled a cross and allowed the ball to squirt free in front of the net. The freshman pounded home the winner in the 86th minute to give FAU the lead for good.
FAU jumped out to an initial lead earlier in the second half when Darnell King beat Vint off a breakaway inside the right post to put the Owls ahead 1-0 in the 55th minute.
The Badgers (1-3-0) responded 17 minutes later when Kyle McCrudden headed one past FAU goalkeeper James McCormick off a corner kick to even things at 1-1. McCormick, who started his second straight game, made one save and recorded his first career victory in net.
"This was a big win for us because we are progressing one game at a time," Donev said.
The Owls will have 10 days to rest before returning to action next Wed., Sept. 22 to take on North Florida.
