Winning five of the six singles matches paved the way for the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team to score an impressive 5-2 victory over Duquesne University on Wednesday afternoon in Stuart. The victory halted a four-match losing skid and improved the Owls to 3-6 on the season.
The match started a busy stretch in which FAU is scheduled to play three matches during a six-day stretch.
Junior Virginia Augustin started the winning ways in singles play with a quick straight-set 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles for her sixth singles victory of the season. The Wellington, Fla. native also won in her first doubles match this spring as she teamed with sophomore Dominique Wimmer at the No. 3 slot.
"I focused on keeping the ball in play from the beginning of the match," said Augustin. "The team's win boosted our confidence and, hopefully, we can use this experience to help win tight matches throughout the rest of the season."
Senior Natalia Totevska cruised to a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles that clinched the victory for the Owls. She has now won consecutive matches for the first time this spring.
"We came to the court wanting to win. It feels good to win today to begin an important stretch for us," said Totevska. "I played really strong in the first set and that philosophy carried over to the rest of the match."
After dropping the opening set 6-3, sophomore Cassie Bergeson rallied to win the next set 6-1 and continued the strong play into the third set. She won the third-set tiebreaker 10-7 to win her fifth match of the season.
Rounding out the winners was sophomore Justine Humair, who won the opening set at No. 1 singles by a tiebreaker 7-1 before having her Duquesne opponent retire, and freshman Natasha Basma, who picked up a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.
Duquesne's record fell to 3-6 for the season.
FAU returns to the court on Saturday, March 6 against University of Louisiana-Lafayette of the Sun Belt Conference. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Patch Reef Park, 2000 Yamato Road, in Boca Raton.
