MURFREESBORO, TN - The Florida Atlantic track team finished 6th the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend.
The high point of the meet was Patricia Gumbs' victory in the 800 meters. Gumbs' time of 2:11.59 was good enough for first place by more than a second over the runner-up, Vasity Chemweno of Western Kentucky. Gumbs was also part of FAU's successful relay teams, helping the 4x440 relay teams to an eighth place finish as well as being part of the 5th place distance medley relay team.
"We ran well but we also left a lot of points on the board," said assistant coach Owen McGregor. "The experience we gained was important, it's all part of learning how to be a champion."
Lisa-Marie Leutner ran well in the distance events, finishing 4th in the 3,000 meters and 7th in the mile. Devin Robinson scored as well for the Owls, placing 8th in the 55 meter dash. FAU also scored in field events with Annalisa Myers tying for sixth in the high jump and Jennifer Holly finishing seventh in the pole vault.
"We have improved greatly since the start of the season, especially our younger runners and I think we've got things going in the right direction," said head coach Alex Smolka.
The Owls begin the outdoor season on March 13,when they cohost the FAU/FIU Invitational in Miramar, FL.
