BOCA RATON, FL - All five starters scored at least 10 points as the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 76-72 on Thursday night.
The Owls (13-12, 9-5 Sun Belt) led by as many as 15 in the first half and were up 47-35 at halftime. The Ragin' Cajuns (11-13, 8-5) rallied to take a one point lead on a Lamar Roberson layup with 6:30 remaining. The teams traded buckets for the next five minutes when Sanchez Hughley stepped up for FAU.
Hughley scored on a layup to put the Owls ahead 70-69 with 1:39 to go, then stole the ball from Chris Gradnigo and lay another basket in to push the lead to three. Randell Daigle tied the game at 72 with 54 seconds left when Hughley added yet another bucket to regain the lead for the Owls. After Shavar Richardson forced a Ragin' Cajun turnover, Hughley connected with fellow junior Brett Royster on an outlet pass for a dunk that sealed the win for FAU.
The victory ended a two-game losing streak for the Owls. Greg Gantt led all scorers with 23 points. FAU will take some time off before traveling to Miami to face rival FIU on Thursday, February 18. The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
