Boca Raton, Fla. - The Budapest, Hungary connection strikes again as swimmers Eszter Bucz and Csaba Pek have been earned the Florida Atlantic University athletic department's Student-Athlete of the Week Honors.
It marks the third time this season that Bucz has received the honor while Pek is being recognized for the second time. Both athletes had standout performances during their teams' triangular meet against Sun Belt Conference foe Western Kentucky and Georgia Tech last Saturday in Atlanta, Ga.
Bucz, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Female Swimmer of the Week, had another banner day in the pool by taking first-place honors in three events. The sophomore has now won her last 10 individual races. She edged a WKU Hilltopper for the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke by a half-second, winning in 1:04.24. She came from behind to win the 200-yard breaststroke event (2:18.58) and had a three-second victory in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.45).
Meanwhile, Pek paced the Owls' effort with two event victories and a runner-up showing in his third race. He won the 200-yard backstroke in dramatic fashion, edging WKU's Adam Dajka by three-tenths of a second with a time of 1:52.80. He trailed with 50 yards remaining before rebounding with a strong final stage. Pek also came in first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.54) and was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:37.32).
Other male nominees for this week's Student-Athlete of the Week Award were golfer Casey Matthews, soccer player T. J. Pluskota and tennis player Marc Abdelnour. On the women's side Eszter Bucz was challenged by soccer's Jesse Shugg.
