After enjoying the holiday break, the Florida Atlantic University men's and women's swimming teams dive back into the pool with home meets against Louisiana State University and Florida International University on Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9 at the FAU Aquatic Center, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
The Owls' men's team will have a dual meet against LSU of the Southeastern Conference on Friday, starting at 2 p.m. Then, the women's team will then compete against rival FIU on Saturday, commencing at 11 a.m.
The men's team is coming off victories over the University of Cincinnati and Findlay University on December 18-19. Sophomore Csaba Pek was named the Sun Belt Conference's Male Swimmer of the Week after placing first in the 200-yard freestyle and backstroke events. The honor was the second time this season that the Budapest, Hungary native has been recognized by the conference.
Other key contributors for the men's team this season have been junior Adam Corbin, who had a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and a top-5 performance in the 200-yard individual medley during the December meets; freshman Alex Rodriguez, who had second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events; sophomore Mikolaj Czarnecki in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly; and sophomore diver Garret LeMon.
Meanwhile, the women's team is striving to beat FIU for the third time this season, after outscoring the Sun Belt Conference opponent 141-97 on December 18 in Boca Raton and 143-96 on October 16 in Miami.
The Owls have been paced by freshman Eszter Bucz, who already has posted a NCAA provisional-qualifying time (2:15.08) in the 200-yard breaststroke, and has set first-year school records in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke events. Other strong performers during the 2009 portion of the schedule were sophomore Jonna Nyback, who accounted for 31 points in the victory at FIU in October; sophomore Ewa Jamborska, a third-place finisher in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events during the team's December meet against the University of Denver and Cincinnati; and freshman Christina Sterman, who has earned the Sun Belt Conference's Diver of the Week Award this season.
