BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University welcomed nearly 500 student athletes to campus Monday night with an ice cream social. The event was sponsored by the Sunrise of Boca Raton Rotary Club and the Marble Slab Creamery, located on SW 18th Street in Boca Raton.
The annual event provides an opportunity for the returning athletes to meet their newest team members and it also gives an opportunity the teams to greet each other after a summer away from campus.
Most athletes leave campus for the summer where they serve internships, participate in college leagues or train for the upcoming seasons.
This past summer, more than 10 baseball players participated in collegiate wooden bat leagues, Alex Smolka, FAU's head track and cross country team led the United States Track team in the Maccabiah Games. Smolka coached Eric Dansky who played 5th in the men's 10,000 meters and 6th in the 5,000 meters. He was also the top American and was 4th overall with a mile and a half to go in the half-marathon when an injury forced him to withdraw.
Outgoing FAU President Frank T. Brogan bid farewell while FAU's Athletics Director Craig Angelos welcomed the students back and introduced the Interim President Dr. John Pritchett.
All athletes are now back on campus, attending classes and ready to make 2009-2010 a winning season.
