BOCA RATON, FL - Jody Brown will open his 15th season as head coach of the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team this weekend at the UCF Invitational.
The Owls are coming off a 12-17 season in 2008 but will return four starters and have brought in a stellar recruiting class and will be looking for a strong start to the 2009 campaign. FAU is led by senior middle blocker Krystena Castro, who led the team with a .323 hitting percentage last year. Fellow seniors Anne Vaughan and Krystena Dzmuranova also return to provide depth along the front row.
Junior setter Nicole Gerig will provide the Owls with experience in running the offense after splitting time at the position last year.
The season begins on Friday with an 11 a.m. match against North Florida. The two teams met in last year's FAU Invitational with the Owls winning in four sets. Depaul will be the next opponent, at 4 pm on Friday. Depaul has won both previous meetings, the last coming in 2004. On Saturday, FAU will play host UCF at 1 p.m. UCF swept the Owls at the 2007 UCF Invitational in their last meeting.
Jacksonville will be the final tournament opponent for FAU on Saturday evening. Live stats for all of FAU `s matches will be available via GameTracker by logging on to fausports.com.
