BOCA RATON, FL - Matt Huskey has been hired as assistant volleyball coach at Florida Atlantic University. He will work primarily with the outside hitters, passing and the team's defensive philosophy. Off the court, Huskey will be involved with recruiting, operations and opponent scouting.
"Matt has an intense passion for the game, which will inevitably filter down to the girls on the team," said Head Volleyball Coach Jody Brown.
Huskey comes to FAU after spending the previous year working in the private sector. Huskey played eight years of club volleyball at St. Louis CYC, the same program that produced FAU all-time assists leader Casey LaRocca. He was a four-year varsity player at St. Louis University High School, where he played libero on a state championship team in 2003 as a junior. After serving as team captain on the defending state champion as a senior, Huskey continued his playing career at the University of Missouri, where the men's club volleyball team won the Division I-AA National Championship in 2006.
Huskey's coaching career began while he was still in college, when he returned to the St. Louis CYC program, serving as an assistant coach during the summers. After graduating from Missouri in the spring of 2008, Huskey returned to St. Louis, where he became a full-time assistant for the top St. Louis CYC club team, which produced five Division I athletes. The team recorded numerous top-10 finishes at national qualifying tournaments as well as at the JVDA national championships. In addition, he guided the JV team at Nerinx Hall High School to an 11-5 record as head coach.
"Being able to coach at the Division I level has always been a dream of mine. I'm in a great situation here at FAU, and I couldn't be happier," said Huskey.
