DENTON, TX - North Texas survived a scare from Florida Atlantic in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Senior guard Josh White scored 24 points and Eric Tramiel added 21 as The Mean Green held on for a 79-73 victory on its home floor.
Led by Paul Graham III the No. 13 seeded Owls of Florida Atlantic (6-26) had cut a 14-point deficit down to a basket in the final minute. Graham finished with 23 points, scoring 18 in the second half.
North Texas (19-11) advances to quarterfinal play at Summit Arena in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Sunday at 3 p.m. Their opponent will be No. 5 seed Middle Tennessee State who defeated No. 12 Arkansas State 69-62 in Murfreesboro on Wednesday.
The commanding UNT lead had been sliced to seven before Graham buried one of his three 3s to make it 73-69 with 2 minutes left. Two Alex Tucker free throws with 48 seconds remaining made it a two-point game, 75-73.
Following what appeared to be a defensive stop, UNT guard Dominique Johnson tracked down an offensive rebound, negating a chance for FAU to tie the game in the final seconds.
