BOWLING GREEN, KY - Western Kentucky University shot 48 percent (27-56) from the field and were led by Amy McNear's 20 points as the Lady Toppers defeated the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team 66-48 at E.A. Diddle Arena on Wednesday. The loss puts the Owls all alone in eighth place in the Sun Belt at 8-9.
The Owls stayed pretty even through the first six minutes as an Andrea Taylor jumper cut the FAU deficit to one point at 10-9. However, those baskets came few and far between as WKU went on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes. A McNear bucket and three straight makes for Teranie Thomas gave the Lady Toppers an 18-9 lead. WKU shot 50 percent in the first half, and after McNear got a lay-up that turned into a three-point play, the Hilltoppers took a 34-20 lead into the locker room.
FAU would push the deficit down in the second half. The Owls went on an 11-4 run and after Breana Turner hit a driving lay-up to cut the WKU lead to 38-31. That, however, was as close as the Owls would get as WKU answered back with a 12-4 run to put the game away. Two more buckets by McNear gave the Lady Toppers a 50-35 lead and the Owls never seriously threatened after that.
"We didn't get rebounds and missed too many lay-ups," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Chancellor Dugan. "You can't win very many games if we missed the lay-ups we did tonight."
WKU (16-11, 10-7 SBC) had three players in double-figures, led by McNear's 20. Kenzie Rich shot six-of-11 from the field and scored 15 points and Arnika Brown had a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds. The Lady Toppers out rebounded FAU on the game 46-30.
FAU (11-16, 8-9 SBC) was led by Jessica Knurick and Breana Turner, who scored 13 points apiece. Carla Stubbs added 12 points, as the Owls shot 30 percent (17-56) from the field.
The Owls can clinch a home game in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a win on Saturday, February 28 over Florida International University in Miami. The tip-off is at 5 p.m. Live streaming audio is available on www.fausports.com.
