Florida Atlantic University rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half against Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday. However, the Trojans' Marian Kursh connected on a three-point play with the score tied in the final minute to secure a 45-40 win for UALR.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half, as the lead changed six times. FAU led by as many as five as Brittany Bowe's jumper fell to give the Owls a 9-4 lead six minutes in. UALR would keep it close and eventually take the lead into the locker room as an Anshel Cooper jumper gave the Trojans a 19-17 lead at the break.
UALR would push the lead into double-digits in the second half. A jumper by Chastity Reed gave the Trojans a 38-28 lead with 8:55 to go. From there, the Owls would go on a 12-2 run over a five-minute stretch. The run ended with a Teri Stamps pull-up jumper to tie the game at 40 with two and a half minutes left. Both teams would trade missed shots until, with 55 seconds left, Asriel Rolfe found Kirsch for a lay-up and a foul to give the Trojans a 43-40 advantage. The Owls had two chances to cut the lead further, but Jessica Knurick missed a lay-up to cut the deficit to one, and then on the following possession, Brittany Bowe got fouled and missed the front end of the one and one. UALR would then seal it with two free-throws.
"We just didn't come out to play tonight," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "Our defense played well but we missed enough lay-ups that had we made them we would've won the game."
Reed led all scorers for UALR (17-4, 9-1 Sun Belt) with 14 points. Kursh added 13 and Kim Sitzmann scored 10 points and hit both Trojan three's. UALR shot 39 percent (20-51) from the field.
Knurick led FAU (8-12, 5-5 SBC) with nine points. FAU shot 29 percent (17-58) for the second consecutive game and out rebounded UALR 41-35.
