Brittany Bowe scored 20 points, along with a career-high 13 assists and seven steals and Andrea Taylor shot for a career-high 18 points as Florida Atlantic University defeated FIU 94-82 at FAU Arena on Wednesday. The win for the Owls is the second in a row over the Golden Panthers, the first time the Owls have ever defeated FIU twice in a row.
FAU went 20 for 36 in the first half, and started out the game on a 13-2 run. Bowe scored five points during that run and 12 in the first half. Taylor responded later in the first half by hitting four-of-four three-pointers and tossing out three assists. Carla Stubbs scored 13 as the Owls led 51-33 at halftime, and were never seriously challenged after that.
"I thought offensively we were able to get good looks" said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "I wanted our team to stay in the discussion in the conference race and we were able to do that tonight."
Six players scored in double-figures for the Owls (5-11, 2-4 Sun Belt), led by Bowe's 20 points. Stubbs added 15 points on six-of-12 shooting, Jessica Knurick scored 11. Jaimie Givens and Breana Turner came off the bench to score 11 and 12 points respectively. FAU picked off 16 offensive rebounds and only turned the ball over six times. The last time the Owls scored 90 or more points was back on March 8, 2003 when FAU defeated Stetson 91-79 in the Atlantic Sun tournament.
Monika Bosilj led all scorers for FIU (3-14, 1-5 SBC) with 24 points. Cherisse Buddy came off the bench to score 18 points in just her second collegiate game. Ashley Traugott scored 17 points on five three-pointers and Elisa Carey scored 14. FIU shot 63 percent in the second half (17-27) but they also committed 20 turnovers.
The Owls go on the road to face North Texas on Saturday, January 17 at 6 p.m. Live audio will be provided for free on www.fausports.com.
