BOCA RATON, FL - Kristyna Dzmuranova's first career double-double helped Jody Brown pick up his 200th career win as the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team defeated South Alabama 3-2 (25-13, 25-16, 24-26, 18-25, 19-17) on Saturday night. The first set was tied at when FAU (9-4, 2-0 Sun Belt) used a 21-9 run to close the set and win 25-13. The Owls led throughout the second set and won the last seven points, including two kills by Morgan Johns to win the set 25-16. Katie Arvidson and Anne Vaughan teamed up on a block to give the Owls a 24-21 lead in the third set, but the Jaguars (6-4, 0-2) won five points in a row, including three straight match points, to take the set.
In the fourth set, USA jumped out to an early lead and although FAU pulled within two, they never caught up to the Jaguars, and USA forced a fifth and final set 25-18. USA once again got off to a quick start, but FAU rallied to tie thing up at 8. The Jaguars took three of the next four points to surge ahead 12-9. Once again, the Owls charged back to tie the set at 15. The teams traded the next few points before Katie Arvidson stepped up. The senior had a kill and teamed with Vaughan on another block to give the Owls the win. FAU won last year's home match with USA in another five set match.
Dzmuranova had 12 kills and 11 digs in the victory. The win gave Brown his 200 as FAU's head coach and the gave the Owls a 2-0 start to conference play. FAU hits the road next weekend as they face Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky.
