BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team opened the 2008 season with a three-game sweep of Bethune-Cookman University.
The Owls and Wildcats were neck and neck early on in the first set before FAU went on a 14-7 run to break the set open on their way to a 25-16 win. FAU jumped out to a 10-3 lead in set two and were never challenged as they won the set 25-13 on the strength of eight Morgan Johns kills.
Bethune-Cookman took a 12-9 lead midway through the third set in a set that featured 10 ties and four lead changes. FAU seized control of the set on a Kristyna Dzmuranova serving run that pushed the lead from two to eight points. A Casey LaRocca service ace sealed the win and gave the Owls a win in their season opener for the first time since 2005, when they also defeated the Wildcats. Johns finished with a match-high 16 kills.
Action continues tomorrow in the FAU Invitational. FAU faces UNF at noon, then caps off the night by playing Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. All matches will be available via GameTracker and both of FAU's matches will be available via webstreaming at FAUsports.com.
