Aug. 14, 2008
The Florida Atlantic University football team conducted a two and half hour practice Thursday in spitting rain. FAU was in full pads for the only practice of the day.
The Owls started with position drills followed by play implementation drills. Players also benefited from a full speed 11 on 11 scrimmage. The defensive highlight of the scrimmage was a violent tackle by safety Ed Alexander on a run by Jeff Blanchard. The play was celebrated by the entire defense. Sophomore Tavious Polo also had a productive practice with an interception and several other pass breakups. Polo had seven interceptions in 2007 and showed the same knack for finding the ball today.
A healthy Rusty Smith took a lighter load of snaps today, giving sophomore quarterback Jeff VanCamp the majority of repetitions. Facing heavy pressure, receiver Lester Jean had a focused reception from VanCamp. Freshman quarterbacks Graham Wilbert and David Kooi also saw increased action.
FAU will be back on the practice field tomorrow with a three-a-day practice. This will be the third three-a-day practice of the fall and the final practices before a scrimmage at Fanfest on Saturday. Coach Howard Schnellenberger and the defending Sun Belt and New Orleans Bowl Champion FAU Owls will host Fan Fest on Saturday, August 16 beginning at noon at the FAU Track and Field complex. Bring the whole family for a day of football and fun as the Owls football team will be available for autographs before taking part in a scrimmage at 2 p.m.
Season and individual game tickets are on sale now. The Owls begin their home schedule against the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday, September 6 at 4 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
