BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's athletics department recently named Matt Pleskovic as its head strength coach.
Pleskovic will oversee the training for all of FAU's 450 student-athletes. He replaces Tony Smith, who took a similar position in his home state of South Carolina. Pleskovic originally joined FAU's strength and conditioning staff in February 2006 as the assistant strength and conditioning coach.
"The strength and conditioning program is essential in intercollegiate athletics, primarily because they can work with the athletes year round," said Craig Angelos, FAU's athletics director. "That is why it was so important to have someone as qualified as Matt. He will do an excellent job."
Pleskovic came to FAU from Gardner-Webb University (GWU) where he served as the head strength coach since 2004 and oversaw 20 teams. While at GWU, Pleskovic had many successful teams, including the 2005 Atlantic Sun's Men's Basketball regular-season champions and the 2006 Atlantic Sun's Men's Track Championship team. Prior to GWU, Pleskovic served as an assistant strength coach at the University of Mississippi where he worked with football, baseball, and men's and women's golf teams while earning his master's degree. The football team was the 2002 Independence Bowl champions, 2003 Southeastern Conference's West champions and the 2004 Cotton Bowl Classic champions. The baseball team was 2004 Regional hosts and in 2003 made a regional appearance.
Pleskovic gained experience with professional athletes through an internship with the Lexington Legends, a Houston Astros affiliate. He also held an internship with the football training facility while at the University of Kentucky (UK) and working at the UK fitness facility.
Pleskovic earned his undergraduate degree in kinesiology/exercise science in 2002 from the University of Kentucky, where he played football from 1999-2001. The Sagamore Hills, Ohio native holds certifications as a strength and conditioning coach, strength and conditioning specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the College Strength and Condition Association.
