DENTON, TX - The Florida Atlantic University track team finished 7th at the Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend.
The Owls finished 8th at last year's meet. Friederike Feil claimed the 3,000 meter steeplechase title in a time of 10:55.52. It was Feil's third individual title as an Owl, after winning both the mile and 3,000 meter steeplechase at last season's indoor meet. Feil finished 2nd in the 1,500 meter and fourth in the 5,000 meters. She scored 23 of FAU's 61.5 points at the meet.
Toyria Mattear ran a 59.72 in the 400 meter hurdles to take the title. Mattear posted her third NCAA automatic qualifying time in the win. Lindsay Glover also qualified for the NCAA Regional, finishing third in 1:00.30. The two titles are the first outdoor titles for FAU since moving to the Sun Belt. Mattear also finished 5th in the 400 meter dash, just ahead of teammate Brandi Prather.
Several athletes set personal records at the meet. The 4x400 meter relay team finished in 4th place. Amber McGillicuddy placed 6th in the heptathlon, scoring a school record 4, 275 points.
"Our goals were to place higher and score more points than last year, and we accomplished both of those," said head track coach Alex Smolka.
"We did well, and with our incoming recruiting class, we have a lot of the pieces in place to be very successful next year," said assistant track coach Owen McGregor.
Elsewhere, Taylor Reeves won the 5,000 meters in 15:19.30 to set a new school record at the Champions Showdown in Melbourne, Florida. Two members of FAU's post-collegiate program, Malika Clary (23.88) and Yanique Booth (24.16), set personal records at the UCF Invitational in Orlando. Booth also finished 8th in the 100-meter dash in 11.74 and won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.47 seconds.
