Florida Atlantic Quotes
Opening Statement from FAU Head Coach Rex Walters
"My hat goes off to Arkansas-Little Rock. They have a tough-minded, defensive oriented team. They really do a good job of getting in to you and really guarding the basketball taking you out of some things that you like to do Our response to that is that I don't think we played worth a darn for 30 minutes. We weren't committed to getting through their initial defense and getting the ball to the paint and getting good ball movement. I got to do a better job at coaching that and getting guys to do that. I thought the last 10 minutes our guys played their hearts out."
Question for FAU Head Coach Rex Walters: You got back in the game in the final 10 minutes and were then hit with a technical. UALR missed the FTs but made a 3-pointer. Talk about that.
"I'm not paid to criticize the refs but you want to let the players decide the game. The bottom line is we didn't make enough plays. If the ball goes in the hoop on the offensive end and we can stop them from getting the ball in on the defensive end, the referees don't come in to play."
Question for Xavier Perkins: (On FAU's performance)
"We're a lot better team than the way we played. As a team, we should have done a lot of things better than what we did."
UALR Quotes
Opening Statement from UALR Head Coach Steve Shields :
"I'm extremely proud of my basketball team. I thought we had a good energy level to start the game. We maybe had some nervousness to start with and had a few too many turnovers in the first half. I thought we were very sound defensively. I thought we did a good job on the glass. Our goal was +12 rebound margin and I think we ended up +10.
Question for UALR Head Coach Steve Shields : Talk about getting over the first hump and what that does for your team.
"That's the toughest part about tournament play at this time of year. Everyone's intensity level goes up at this time of year. You know you're going to face people's best shots and that's something that we prepared for coming in and knew we were facing a very good basketball team that's very well-coached. (Florida-Atlantic) has won 8 out of 11 games, they had a stretch where they won five straight and they played extremely well against FIU. You've got to get number one. I thought our guys had a great mindset from the start and I thought we were very crisp offensively. We weren't as solid offensively but I thought we settled in toward the end of the first half. "
Question for Mike Smith: Talk about the free throws tonight. Did it seem to get in your head at some point?
"I don't think it got in anybody's head. It was kind of frustrating though that we were missing the free throws but we kept listening to coach and he said we would win this thing and we believed him"
Question for Steve Moore: Talk about being able to finally put the game away at the end when you hit two free throws with 10 seconds left.
"Those were big free throws we missed a lot coming up to that. Knocking it down was good for the team and we got that win so that's a plus. We fought hard tonight collectively as a group."
