Lauren Shue won the 500-yard freestyle and set a conference record at the Sun Belt Conference Championships to help Florida Atlantic University women's swimming and diving team gain the lead after the first day of competition at the championships. The squad claimed wins in two other events as it looks to win its third straight SBC title.
Shue (Fort Myers, FL) won the first individual event of the meet by breaking her own SBC Championship record set last year in the 500 free. The senior swam a 4:51.06 in the event which gave her an NCAA `B' cut time. Jenny Harms and Shawna Griffith also advanced to the finals and took fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the 200 IM, Lindsey Alexander (Fort Myers, FL) kept the momentum for the Owls as she took gold in 2:03.23 to repeat as the SBC champion. Her time also gave her an NCAA consideration time.
Two FAU swimmers advanced to the `A' finals of the 50 free. Stephanie DeRito (Apollo Beach, FL) and Bianca Murphy (Jupiter, FL) took fourth and fifth in the event in 23.93 and 23.98, respectively.
The women's dive team got off to a great start in its first event of the championships. Three women advanced to the finals and Samantha Schlachterman (Cherry Hill, NJ) and Lauren Harvath (Manchester, MO) took first and second in the event. Schlachterman posted a score of 248.25 to narrowly beat out her teammate with a score of 244.70.
The team champion of the three-day event will be crowned on Saturday in Nashville, TN.
