The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team overcame a second half where they shot ten of 36 from the field. The Owls got a career-high effort from Carla Stubbs, 22 points and 11 rebounds in a 64-59 win over Florida International at FAU Arena on Thursday.
FAU jumped on top from the start, scoring the first ten points of the game and playing solid defense on the FIU. The Owls held the Golden Panthers to 28 percent shooting (9-32) from the field in the first half. The Owls had their biggest lead at the half after two Andrea Taylor free-throws made the margin 36-23 FAU at halftime.
FIU mounted a second half comeback. They were led by Monika Bosilj who had a game-high 27 points for the Golden Panthers (12-14, 8-7 Sun Belt). Bosilj hit a three-pointer with 8:50 in the second half to tie the game at 45. Then she hit the front end of the one-and-one to give the Golden Panthers a 46-45 lead. The lead would switch hand multiple times from there, until, with 4:11 in the game, Jaimie Givens got an offensive rebound and put it back in to give the Owls the lead back at 56-54. FAU would never trail after that, as Givens took advantage of another rebound and putback to lock the game up for FAU at 60-56.
"I'm so proud of our kids and the way the battled," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "They played great defense throughout and just hung with a good FIU team."
FIU had one other player in double-figures along with Bosilj's 27. Fanni Hutlassa added 13 points. However, she fouled out and missed the final 6:43 of the game.
FAU also had two players in double-digits, led by Stubbs' 22. Brittany Bowe added 13 points for the Owls (6-18, 2-13 SBC). Jaimie Givens added nine points with buckets in key situations. The Owls outrebounded FIU 51-43 and went 20 for 31 from the foul line. This is FAU's first win over FIU in women's basketball since March 8, 1996.
FAU will look to make it two in a row at home on Saturday when they face Middle Tennessee at FAU Arena. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
