Florida Atlantic University was outscored 12-2 by Denver in overtime on Saturday as the Pioneers came from behind to defeat the Owls 76-66 at Magness Arena on Saturday.
FAU led the entire game, up 31-26 at halftime on 40 percent (12-30) shooting. The Owls would lead by as many as 11 points in the second half after a Carla Stubbs three put FAU ahead 44-33 with under thirteen minutes left. The Pioneers would fight back, eventually cutting the lead to one on a Kaetlyn Murdoch layup to put FAU's lead at 62-61. Forced to foul, the Pioneers fouled Brittany Bowe who hit two free-throws to put the Owls up three. Then Denver's Britteni Rice drove to the bucket and found an open Brianna Culberson out top for a made three-pointer with 3.7 seconds left that evened the game at 64 and sent the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Denver scored the final 10 points of the period, as a lay-up by Murdoch put the Pioneers ahead at 68-66, after a turnover by Brittany Bowe, Celena Otero drove to the basket and got a lay-up to seal the win for Denver.
"I thought we battled and took it to them throughout regulation," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We've just got to learn to finish and we're not there yet."
Murdoch led one of four Pioneer players in double-digits with 17 points and 17 rebounds for Denver (4-4, 1-0 Sun Belt). Otero and Culberson had 13 points apiece and Rice added 10 points for the Pioneers, who shot 61 percent (16-26) in the second half to force the extra session and out rebounded FAU 40-38.
FAU (3-5, 0-1 SBC) was led by Stubbs, who scored 17 points and five rebounds. No other Owl was in double-digits although Bowe scored eight of her nine points in the second half and overtime. Jessica Knurick added 10 rebounds with her eight points.
FAU will travel to Nassau, Bahamas for the Sunsplash Shootout as they face Mercer on Thursday at 4 p.m.
