Troy, AL - Florida Atlantic University (4-21) (0-13) fought tooth and nail with Troy University (12-11) (5-8) until the final buzzer on Saturday, but fell short 66-60 in Sun Belt action.
Facing a 61-60 deficit with 56 seconds left, Brittney Crenshaw missed a high-post jumper off the rim. She would foul on the loose ball and send Kylie Morrissy to the charity stripe. She connected on one and the Owls trailed 62-60 with 37 ticks remaining. Shuteamia Brayboy missed a floater on the ensuing drive and Troy got it back after the ball rolled out of bounds. The Trojans knocked down two free-throws to make it a two possession game and ice the victory.
Crenshaw had 10 points and 12 rebounds to post her second double-double of the season. She also had three assists and two steals. Mistoria Brown had 12 points and seven boards, while Brayboy put in nine points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
In the first half, the Trojans came out with an early 13-2 lead at the 14:38 mark. The Owls cut the deficit to nine with 5:47 left. Brown would score six of the next 10 points for FAU, as a 10-0 run gave them a 28-27 advantage with 2:25 on the clock. Down 31-30 with 35 seconds until half-time, Crenshaw drove the lane and drew the foul and one. After the made point after, FAU went to the break with a 33-31 lead.
Entering the second frame, the Owls jumped out to a five point lead at the 18:15 mark. Troy fought back and took a 44-43 advantage on an Amy Lewis lay-in. The score would flip-flop five times until the Owls took a 60-59 lead at the 1:17 mark. A Kylie Morrissy bucket from the left block would give the Trojans their final lead, 61-60 with under a minute to go.
Twelve of Troy's final 14 points came from the free-throw line. They ended up converting 21-of-30 (70.0 percent) of their looks from the line. The Owls created 20 turnovers, but shot only 33.3 percent from the field and were out rebounded for the fourth straight game.
Morrissy led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Lewis added 14 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
The Owls will return to the hardwood on Saturday February 10th to do battle with in-state rival FIU at 3:30 p.m. It will be telecast live on CSS.
