Boca Raton, FL - It was only fitting that on Senior Day three Florida Atlantic University (6-23, 2-15 SBC) seniors came up with double digit scoring games to get by South Alabama (12-15, 6-11 SBC), 58-55, in the Owls final game at FAU Arena this season.
"You couldn't have written a better ending for Senior Day than what you saw tonight," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "Our seniors came out and got it done in front of their friends and family. We held onto a late lead for the second straight game and are looking hungry entering the final stretch."
Mistoria Brown and Cristal Randolph led all scorers with 12 points for FAU. Brown finished with seven rebounds, while Randolph hit two trifectas. Demina Anderson scored all 10 of her points in the second half and ended the contest with five boards. Sally N'Diaye rounded out the senior scoring with two points and two rebounds.
Leading 54-48 after a Demina Anderson lay-up at the 1:25 mark, the Owls had to withstand a late Jaguar run to get the victory. Two straight baskets trimmed FAU's lead to 54-52 with 27 seconds remaining. Cristal Randolph hit two free-throws in the one-and-one to give the Owls back a four point cushion. Courtney Brown got a put back and the foul, which she converted, off an errant Petra Jacob lay-up. With a 56-55 advantage, the Owls once again had Cristal Randolph head to the free-throw line and hit two shots in the one-and-one. Up by three, Mistoria Brown came up with a steal off the inbound that secured the game with four seconds remaining.
In the opening frame, South Alabama led 21-12 at the 8:23 mark. FAU responded with a 13-2 run that evened the score at 25 with 1:46 to go. A Boswell lay-up with 32 seconds remaining gave USA a 27-25 advantage entering the break.
Entering the second, the Jaguars were able to capture a five point lead after a Monique Jones three at the 17:28 mark. The Owls stormed back and used a 9-2 streak to take their final lead, 36-34, on a Brown lay-up. FAU would build a lead as big as seven with 7:01 left and used 39.3 percent shooting effort from the field in the second to fuel the victory.
South Alabama was led by 11 points from three players: Monique Jones, Valencia Boswell, and Courtney Brown. The Jaguars out rebounded the Owls 48-42, but shot only 31.9 percent. FAU hit 15-of-19 free-throws for a 78.9 percent clip. They tied a season low with 13 fouls and allowed a season low five free-throws.
Florida Atlantic will close out the 2006-2007 regular season with a road contest against an undefeated Middle Tennessee State squad in Murfreesboro, TN on Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern. Live audio can be heard for free on fausports.com.
