BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Gainesville, FL to compete in the NCAA South Regional. The Owls have already competed in Gainesville once this season, as the women finished 5th and the men finished 10th at the season-opening Gator Invitational.
The women head to Regionals coming off of a 5th place finish at the Sun Belt Championships. Friederike Feil once again led the way, finishing eighth in the individual competition. Feil has been FAU's top runner all season and is expected to continue that trend at Regionals. The men's team finished 9th at the Sun Belt Championships but Coach Smolka was pleased with the way his team ran.
"For the men to finish 9th with such a young team is really good in terms of building the program," said Smolka.
The Owls finished 13th at last year's Regional in Knoxville, TN and was third among the six Florida schools at the event. It was the best Regional finish in program history. Coach Smolka thinks the experience of that meet and this year's season opener will help his team's performance at this weekend's meet.
"The distance is different than it was (in the season opener), but I think the fact we've already seen the course where the race will take place is going to be a huge help for us."
The men's 10K will start at 10 a.m. with the women's 6K to follow at 11 a.m.
