BOCA RATON, FL - In its final home match of the season, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost to rival Florida International (22-30, 23-30, 29-31) on Friday night.
The Golden Panthers completed a season sweep of the Owls, having won this season's previous encounter in Miami. Game one was tied at nine before Florida International launched a 14-6 run to take an eight point that proved to be the final margin of victory. It was a similar story in game two as the teams were deadlocked at five before a 9-2 spurt by the Golden Panthers pushed the score to 14-7. A Casey LaRocca service ace pulled the Owls to within two at 25-23, but Florida International took the next five points to seize a two games to none lead.
An Anita Szymanska serving run gave the Golden Panthers a 5-0 lead early in the third game, but FAU responded with a 10-5 rally to pull even. Neither team was able to gain a lead larger than two points the rest of the way. The game was even at 29 when an Olga Verdun kill and a block assist by Vergun and Szymanska put the match away for the Golden Panthers.
FAU falls to 6-19 on the year and 3-12 in conference play. LaRocca had a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs on the night. Morgan Johns led the Owls with 14 kills. FAU returns to action on Friday, November 9, when it travels to Mobile to take on South Alabama.
