BOCA RATON, FL - Casey LaRocca will be recognized for breaking Florida Atlantic University's career assist record in a brief ceremony prior to FAU's match against rival Florida International on Friday night.
LaRocca set the record with 28 assists against Middle Tennessee on Friday. She now has 3,430 assists in less than three full years. The record was a bright spot for the Owls (6-18, 3-11 Sun Belt), who lost to both Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky in three games over the weekend. In spite of the losses head volleyball coach Jody Brown feels that the Owls are on the right track.
"We are a good team, but we are also very young. We have to learn that the key is not only to work hard but to work smart," said Brown.
Florida International (14-7, 9-5 Sun Belt) is led by outside hitter Yarimar Rosa who leads the Sun Belt in kills at more than five per game. Olga Verdun also possesses some impressive offensive numbers, averaging better than four kills a game. The tandem combined for 26 kills in a 3-0 sweep of the Owls earlier this season in Miami. However, it is the Golden Panthers' setter who impresses Coach Brown the most.
"(Keila Oliveira) is really good. She's older than us, not only in terms of class but in age. I believe she's 25 and that makes a difference in terms of strength and experience."
Friday is FAU's last home match of the season and is Fan Appreciation Night. The first 50 students will receive free FAU t-shirts. The first 200 fans will get free rally towels and the first 30 fans wearing FAU apparel will receive a free car flag. FAUsports.com will carry the match live via GameTracker and live streaming video starting at 7 p.m.
