BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team will face conference foes Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky this weekend.
The Owls (6-16, 3-9 Sun Belt), have played both teams already this season, falling to the Blue Raiders and Hilltoppers on back to back nights earlier this season. On October 11, Middle Tennessee defeated the Owls in three games in a match that was played at Grandview Prep due to the continuing renovations on FAU Arena. Ashley Adams and Ashley Mead, who lead the Blue Raiders in kills, had 11 and 12 respectively in the sweep of FAU. Mallory Deneen had a match-high 13 kills for the Owls that night.
The next afternoon, Western Kentucky also took three straight games in defeating FAU. The Hilltoppers' Megan Argabright and Abbie Siljendahl both had 11 kills to help offset the 34 combined kills of Krystena Castro (13), Deneen (11) and Katie Arvidson (10). That match was played at Lynn University. Head volleyball coach Jody Brown believes the previous experience will help his team in this weekend's matches.
"We are a different team now then we were the first time played those two teams. The biggest difference is that now we are back in the arena. We can get more court time and can break things down in practice. Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky are both very good teams, but we played them both pretty close."
FAU will be coming off of a disappointing home stand that saw the Owls lose all four matches, including two at the recently reopened FAU Arena. The matches at the arena were the Owls' first of the season after hosting their first four home matches of the year elsewhere. The match against Middle Tennessee should also be historic as junior setter Casey LaRocca is expected to break Jeana Boyle's career assists record in that match.
"Casey does a very good job of knowing not only where she should be on the court, but where everyone else should be as well," Coach Brown said.
Friday's match at Middle Tennessee will begin at 8 p.m. eastern. Live stats and audio of the match will be available at goblueraiders.com. Saturday's match at Western Kentucky is scheduled for a 3 p.m. eastern start.
