FAU Takes Nine Events at FIU to Open Season

MIAMI, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's swimming and diving team took a positive first step in defending their 2006-07 Sun Belt crown, taking 9 of 13 events in their season-opening meet at Florida International University on Saturday.

Eight different FAU team members won individual events, while the 200 medley relay team (Lindsey Alexander, Kalina Neal, Jessica Lampkin, Bianca Murphy) won convincingly with a time of 1:51.00. The Owls have set team and conference records in the 200 medley relay at the Sun Belt Championships in each of the last two seasons.

Stephanie DeRito (25.02) edged teammate Bianca Murphy (25.06) in the 50 freestyle, with Murphy coming back to win the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.10.

Jenny Harms topped the field in the 200 freestyle (1:55.87), while Danielle Kuykendall led a Florida Atlantic sweep of the top three spots in the 1000 freestyle with a 10:32.61 finish.

Lindsey Alexander was the only participant to break the one-minute mark in the 100 backstroke, winning the event with a time of 59.60. Jessica Lampkin (58.14) and Jennifer Forcht (59.03) finished 1-2 in the 100 butterfly with times under a minute as well.

Shawna Griffith won the 400 IM by a convincing margin of nearly six seconds, posting a time of 4:32.92.

Lisa Thompson (247.95) and Samantha Schlachterman (237.35) placed first and second, respectively, in the one-meter diving event for the Owls.

Florida Atlantic will next be in action Saturday in a tri-meet against Florida Gulf Coast and Tampa in Fort Myers, FL starting at 10:00 a.m.
