BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team will hit the road again this week after hosting their first two home matches last weekend.
The Owls defeated South Alabama and lost to Troy at Grandview Preparatory School, which served as FAU's home gym while renovations at the FAU Arena are being completed. FAU's record now stands at 6-9 overall and 3-2 in the Sun Belt.
FAU will travel to Miami to take on Florida International Tuesday night. The Golden Panthers (10-2, 5-0 Sun Belt) lead the East division behind the play of reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week and Preseason Player of the Year Yarimar Rosa. Rosa averages more than 5 kills a game, but is not FIU's only threat as Olga Verdun averages 4.64 kills a game as well. The Golden Panthers swept both of last year's meetings, dropping only one game in the process. Rosa had a total of 47 kills in the two matches.
Friday, the Owls will be in the Mile High City to take on Denver. The Pioneers (8-9, 2-2) are coming off a difficult week in which they lost to Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee, winning one game in two matches. Junior Holly Benson (3.85 kills/game) and Kim Muller (3.61 kills/game) lead the attack for Denver. Benson had 14 kills and Muller added 10 kills in a three-game sweep of the Owls in Boca Raton last season.
FAU closes out the week on Sunday in Denton where they will face North Texas. The Mean Green (5-13, 1-3) will be looking to duplicate last year's performance when they defeated the Owls in five games. Katy Prokof had 10 kills in that match and leads the team in kills (3.2/game) this season. Tuesday's match against Florida International begins at 7 p.m.
