BOCA RATON, FL -- After a brief break in the schedule the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team will leave the state of Florida for just the second time since November 19.
The Owls' offense has been given a spike with the return of DeAndre Rice, who in four games this season following his return is averaging 17.5 points per contest. Paul Graham's role has changed since Rice's return, but he is still averaging 15.4 points per game, mostly as a reserve in recent contests, and has failed to hit double-figures in an appearance just once this season. Derrick Simmons and Jeff Parmer each add 9.8 points per contest and combine for 13.2 rebounds per game.
FAU has won six of its last nine contests, and picked up a huge Sun Belt Conference road win its last time as a visitor - against Florida International, 68-66, on December 28. The Owls are 0-5 outside the state of Florida in 2006-07, but four of those losses came to open the season. Florida Atlantic is shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 33.9 percent on three-point field goals, averaging 69.3 points per game.
UNO (7-7, 3-0) is coming off a win over Tulane on Monday, 84-77. The Privateers committed just six turnovers during the game and evened their season mark.
New Orleans had travel issues as snow pounded the Denver area following a win over Denver University, postponing its most recently scheduled Sun Belt Conference game against Arkansas State.
The Privateers are led by the conference's leading scorer Bo McCalebb, who contributes 26.1 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game and averages 35.8 minutes per contests. He's led the team in scoring in all but two games this year.
Jamie McNeilly (12.5), James Parlow (11.5) and Shaun Reynolds (11.4) each average in double-figures in scoring as well. No other Privateer averages more than five points a night.
UNO is shooting 45.2 percent from the floor as a squad and 41.5 percent from behind the arc, averaging 71.6 points per game. The team has won five of its last six games and is 5-1 at home.
The game is set to begin at 7 p.m., and will be broadcast in New Orleans live and will air on tape-delay on Cox Sports Television.
South Alabama (7-7, 1-2 SBC) is coming off a 59-51 home loss to Middle Tennessee . The Jaguars shot just 36.4 percent in the game but committed just seven turnovers in the loss.
Demetric Bennett leads the way offensively for the Jags at 14.5 points per contest to go with 5.4 rebounds. He's shooting 40.6 percent from the floor Daon Merritt is among the conference leaders at 6.4 assists per game and Earnest Little, who has played in just five of 14 contests, leads the rebounding effort at 7.6 per game. Bennett's 5.4 is the next highest.
The Jaguars are shooting 42.1 percent as a team, 34.4 percent from long range, and average 68.0 points per game. Last year's West Division champion will face Florida International on Thursday prior to its match-up with the Owls on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Both meetings will be the first between the two programs as FAU makes its first trip through the Sun Belt. New Orleans visits FAU Arena on February 17 and South Alabama on February 21.
