BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's cheer team recently finished No. 12 at the Universal Cheer Association National Championship. FAU advanced to the annual competition from a pool of 40. The squad, comprised of 17 rather than the traditional 20, battled through a season that began last April with extensive tryouts.
"We are very proud of how well the team performed among so many outstanding cheer programs," said FAU's head cheer coach Heather Henderson. "We have created a good foundation to build on for next year. I'm especially proud of how our team bounced back from so many injuries."
The cheer squad performs at football and basketball games, in addition to making special appearances at other university functions. Just prior to the competition, the squad performed their final routine and received high praise at a men's basketball halftime. They also performed an exhibition at King of the Jungle in Fort Lauderdale, just prior to leaving for nationals.
FAU will hold tryouts on Saturday, April 14 in the FAU Arena, but is expects to return a bulk of the squad comprised of nine freshmen, six sophomores, one junior and one senior.
