BOCA RATON, FL -- Michele Fazzari scored her first goal of 2006 to help lift the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team past Mount St. Mary's 2-0 at FAU Field on Friday.
The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes due to lightning, but once the game began, the Owls took control. They possessed the ball for much of the first half, and out-shot the Mount 15-0 in the first 45 minutes. Despite FAU's dominance on the paper, the game remained scoreless. Fazzari caught an unlucky break when her right-footed shot off a corner kick rang off the far post. She would have several other opportunities, but couldn't solve the Mount St. Mary's keeper.
Fazzari would finally break through in the 78th minute, taking a pass from Susanna Lehtinen and burring a shot past the Mount St. Mary's keeper who had came out to cut down the angle.
Alicia Tirelli would add an insurance tally in the 87th minute, lifting a shot from 25-yards out into the upper-left corner of the goal to give FAU some breathing room.
The Mount wouldn't register a shot attempt until late in the second half following the Fazzari goal. FAU would finish the game with a 29-3 edge in shot attempts, but just a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. FAU would also earn 15 corner kicks while holding Mount St. Mary's without an attempt. Tirelli and Lehtinen each had seven shot attempts for FAU.
Jessica Badders got the start and played the first half without having to face a shot. Megan Coyne played the final 45 minutes, facing all 3 shots mustered by the Mount, and turning aside both shots on goal, earning the win. The shutout is FAU's second consecutive.
The Owls (3-2-2) have now won three in a row after going winless in their first four games. They will now turn their attention to No. 1 Florida State, who will visit FAU Field for the first time on Sunday at noon. It is a rematch of the opening round 2005 College Cup matchup, in which FSU earned a 3-0 victory on its way to the seminfinals.
