BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team hits the road this week with just six games remaining on its schedule before the conference tournament.
Having already qualified for the Atlantic Sun Championship, FAU is not only battling for seeding in the tournament but also is chasing the conference regular-season crown. The Owls face two opponents against whom they will be the favorite, tackling Mercer on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. and Stetson on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m.
FAU (11-10, 10-4 A-Sun) entered the week one loss behind Lipscomb. But an upset of the Bisons by Stetson on Monday 85-67 left four teams with four losses each at the top of the standings.
The Owls are also going head-to-head with East Tennessee State (11-4 A-Sun) and Belmont (10-4 A-Sun) in the battle for first. ETSU comes to Boca on Thursday, Feb. 16 holding a 63-61 win over FAU in early January, while the Owls split the season series with Belmont.
Head coach Matt Doherty's squad holds momentum going into Tuesday's game with Mercer, winning its last two games and having wins over both the Bears and Stetson this season. With increased contributions from senior guard Quinton Young (16.5 points per game in the last four games), FAU is finding some much-needed depth in the lineup down the stretch.
DeAndre Rice leads the Owls with 17.4 points per game, while Rodney Webb, coming off his eighth double-double of the year, adds 14.6 points and 8.0 rebounds. Freshman Carlos Monroe chips in 12.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, with six other Owls contributing between 4.7 and 7.5 points per game.
Mercer Preview FAU recorded a 91-80 win victory over the Bears on Jan. 7. Carlos Monroe scored 14 points in his college debut, the first game in what would become a five-game winning streak for FAU.
The Owls shot 57.7% from the field and 81.5% from the line. Fred Marshall netted a career-high 15 points for FAU, Rice led the way with 20 points and Webb had 16.
Andrew Brown and Jacob Skogen had game highs with 24 points apiece for Mercer (5-13, 4-8 A-Sun). Skogen and Brown are the leading scorers on average for a team that shoots just 43.8% from the field, is being outscored by nearly 10 points per game, and has lost three in a row and eight of 10.
Stetson Preview The Hatters are being outscored by 5.9 points per game and shoot just 41.9% from the field. Stetson (6-17, 5-9 A-Sun) appeared to be headed to the bottom of the standings after only getting wins over Jacksonville and North Florida in its first 18 games but picked up valuable upsets at East Tennessee (74-71 OT) and Kennesaw (80-68), and with Monday night's win, has four wins in its last five games.
EJ Gordon at 14.5 points per game and Anthony Register at 13.7 are the only players averaging double figures on the season. Gordon was the leading scorer in the Hatters' 77-62 loss at FAU in January.
Monroe had career highs for points (21) and rebounds (9) in that game, the second of his college career. Webb had 11 rebounds as FAU won the glass 35-22 and shot 60.0% from the field in ending the first half with a 39-26 advantage.
