DELAND, Fla. (AP) - DeLand, Fla. - Rodney Webb recorded his ninth double-double of the year as the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team fell to Stetson 56-49 on Sunday afternoon at the Edmunds Center in DeLand, Fla.
Webb totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds, including eight boards in the first half. The senior was joined in double figures by freshman center Carlos Monroe, who had 11 points while hitting five-of-six from the field.
Trailing 20-15 at the break, the first half was the lowest-scoring half of the year for FAU. The visitors hit seven-of-24, or 29.2%, from the field.
FAU did not attempt a free throw in the first half for the first time all season and came back to hit 11-of-19 in the second stanza. The Hatters were 13-of-21 at the stripe.
Stetson held the lead for the entire game, getting off to a 14-6 advantage at the 11:01 mark of the first half. FAU cut the lead to one point 27-26 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Hatters responded by scoring nine of the next 11 points.
A missed dunk by Brent Crews would have cut the FAU deficit to two points with just under five minutes remaining. Instead, Stetson responded with four straight points and led by at least six points the rest of the way.
FAU shot 34.7% from the field for the game, while Stetson hit 50.0%. The Owls were four-of-22 from three-point range.
"We are making progress after struggling in recent games," said head coach Matt Doherty after the game. "But we can still play harder. I really appreciate hearing other coaches tell me that we play hard because it means that we are giving 100% on the court no matter what the result. We have not heard that in recent weeks."
EJ Gordon topped the Hatters with 18 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals.
FAU is back at home on Thursday, Feb. 16 to open its final homestand of the season, as the Owls face East Tennessee State at 7:00 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit www.fausports.com.
