BOCA RATON, FL - Shuteamia Brayboy hit a 17-foot jump shot at the buzzer to lift Florida Atlantic University to victory over Ohio University, 58-56, on Saturday afternoon in the FAU Invitational championship.
"This was a great team win that boosts our morale heading back into Sun Belt play," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We came up with some great stops on defense and really battled for this victory."
With 6.1 seconds left in the game and the Owls leading 56-55, Lauren Kohn went to the free-throw line with a chance to put Ohio on top for the first time in the second half. She missed the first shot and connected on the second to tie the score. Brayboy stormed down the court for the Owls and drained a 17-footer that hit off the back-board and then the rim, before falling for the win as time expired.
The Bobcats cut a 10-point second half-deficit by going on a 17-7 run to tie the score at 43 on two Quintana Ward free-throws with 13:27 left. Both squads went cold from the field immediately afterward as the two teams combined for only seven points over the next five minutes. FAU held on to a narrow 47-45 advantage with eight minutes to play.
Florida Atlantic would build a lead as big as 50-45 with 7:11 left before the Bobcats fought back, as Ward hit a left-corner three at the 1:58 mark to knot the score at 55. The Bobcats trailed 56-55 after a Mistoria Brown free-throw with 1:46 to play and were unable to capitalize on four field-goal attempts in the game's final two minutes.
Brown led the Owls with 11 points and six rebounds. Brayboy had six points, six assists, and 10 rebounds for FAU. Cristal Randolph and Demina Anderson each chipped in nine points.
In the first frame the Owls and Bobcats exchanged baskets, as FAU held onto a 13-10 advantage with 13:21 left. Florida Atlantic took charge and grabbed a 10 point lead, 22-12, off a Cristal Randolph triple with 9:22 to go in the opening half. Ohio cut the first-half deficit to as much as three points, but the Owls headed to the break with a 34-26 advantage.
The Bobcats were lead in scoring by Lauren Kohn who had 13 points and nine boards. Quintana Ward and Alana Trotter each produced 10 points in the losing cause.
FAU is back on the road for two Sun Belt games next week. They will square off with New Orleans on Wednesday night at 8 p.m., before heading to Mobile, AL to take on South Alabama on Saturday at 6 p.m. All the action can be heard live on fausports.com.
