BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University women's basketball will open the 2006-2007 season on Friday November 9 against no. 20 New Mexico at 3:30 p.m. The Owls will take on two ranked teams in the three-game Veterans Day Classic, which is hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, AZ.
"Our first regular season tournament is going to be a huge challenge for us," said head coach Chancellor Dugan. "I think that any time you step up and play a top-25 team you're going to find your strengths and weaknesses very quickly."
Senior Cristal Randolph and junior Shuteamia Brayboy look to provide veteran leadership for FAU in the beginning of the season. Randolph averaged 5.4 points per game last year and shot 38.0 percent from beyond the arc. She is seven triples away from 100 for her career. Brayboy averaged 5.8 assists-per-game in 2005-2006, and looks to run the point for this year's squad.
Plenty of new faces give the Owls a fresh look. Freshmen Brittany Bowe, Bianca Sellers, Andrea Taylor, and Carla Stubbs look to make an immediate impact. The Owls also welcome back senior Mistoria Brown who took last season off.
Chancellor Dugan is just one victory away from reaching 100 for he career at Florida Atlantic University. She is the first coach to ever lead the Owls to an NCAA tournament appearance, doing so in 2005-2006 by winning the Atlantic Sun conference championship. This will be the Owls debut season in the Sun Belt conference.
FAU will face Nebraska on Sunday November 12, at 4:30 p.m. and then conclude the tournament against no. 12 Arizona State on Monday November 13, at 8 p.m. It will be the Owls' first match-up with each of these schools.
Each game this season will be broadcast for free live over the internet at fausports.com.
