Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University women's basketball will open Sun Belt competition this Saturday at 7 p.m., as they face Western Kentucky (3-2) at FAU Arena. The Owls will be looking for their second home victory of the season.
"Western Kentucky has a great inside player in Crystal Kelly, who is probably going to be an All-American this year," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We have to limit what she does and play our game. If we can put two halves together we're going to come out on top."
This past weekend, FAU dropped games to no. 14 Vanderbilt and former Atlantic Sun opponent Belmont in the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving tournament. The team overcame a 15 point deficit to tie the score against Belmont, 65-65, with 33 seconds remaining. The Bruins would take the lead on two free-throws and Florida Atlantic narrowly missed a lay-up at the buzzer that would have sent the game to overtime.
Mistoria Brown was named to the all-tournament team, averaging 13 points and 5.5 rebounds over the two-game stretch. Shuteamia Brayboy's four assists against Belmont placed her alone in fifth-place all-time in career assists at FAU. Carla Stubbs and Sally N'Diaye each notched their first double-digit scoring performances over the weekend.
Western Kentucky defeated Penn State, 74-64, to capture third-place at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands this past Saturday. Junior Crystal Kelly leads the Hilltoppers with 20.2 points-per-game and 7.4 rebounds-a-contest. The forward was named first-team on the Sun Belt Pre-Season All-Conference squad. Western Kentucky will face Morehead State this Wednesday, before heading to Boca Raton.
Both the men's and the women's basketball team will be taking part in a double-header on Saturday. The men's team will face Norfolk State at 2 p.m., before the women's squad takes on Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. All women's games this season can be heard for free on fausports.com. Home contests will also feature a pay-to-view video service, which gives fans the opportunity to watch the game over their computer.
