BOCA RATON, FL -- Head coach Rex Walters introduced his Florida Atlantic University men's basketball squad at the 2006-07 media day at FAU Arena on Monday.
"I'm excited about my team. We're bigger, we're more athletic, and we have a better feel for each other than we had last year," he said.
The Owls will play their first season in the Sun Belt Conference this upcoming year, and will welcome in seven new players to the roster, including a trio of heralded freshmen in Sanchez Hughley, Xavier Perkins, and Avery Holley. Holley is also a member of FAU's football team.
Adding to the fresh blood for the Owls are four transfers. Sean Alarcon (Indian River CC), Eni Cuka (Niagara), Seydou Kone (Broward CC), and Jeff Parmer (Palm Beach CC) will add depth and experience to a club that lost two of its top five scorers from last year (#2 Rodney Webb, 15.5, #4 Quinton Young, 7.2).
FAU will be led by two seniors, Brent Crews and DeAndre Rice. Rice led the Owls in scoring last season, while Crews posted one of the top assist totals in the program's history last year. The pair will be joined by junior Derrick Simmons and sophomores Paul Graham III and Carlos Monroe. Monroe earned Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team honors last year, while Graham and Simmons were two critical pieces off the bench. Simmons finished the 2005-06 season averaging 4.3 points and 2.1 rebounds a game while providing a spark defensively, and Graham finished fifth on the team in scoring at 7.0 points per game.
The team has one scheduled exhibition game, set for November 2 at 7 p.m., versus Florida Tech.
The Owls open up with six games on the road, including contests versus Oklahoma State and Old Dominion.
The home schedule is set to begin on November 28, when the Owls welcome Florida Memorial to FAU Arena. The conference schedule tips-off on December 13 at home versus Troy.
