NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team got its offense back on track, shooting 49.2% from the floor, but the Owls fell at Belmont 92-82 in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Friday evening.
Five Owls hit double figures, led by Carlos Monroe and Quinton Young with 18 points each. Paul Graham added 16, DeAndre Rice 12 and Rodney Webb, 10 points and eight rebounds.
A high-paced first half, spurred by hot shooting from both teams, left the hosts on top 44-40 at the break. FAU (9-9, 8-3 A-Sun) shot 56.3% in the half, Belmont (9-9, 7-4 A-Sun) connected 51.5% of the time.
Young and Graham each hit 4-of-5 from the field and combined for 19 points in the half. Brent Crews collected six assists in the first half and finished with eight in the game.
FAU could pull no closer in the second half but would not go away quietly. The Bruins went on top by 11 on numerous occasions, and the Owls kept themselves in the game by slicing the deficit to seven points 84-77 with 2:34 remaining.
Foul trouble plagued FAU, with Crews and Fred Marshall fouling out. The result was a 19-12 edge at the free throw line for Belmont.
The Owls are back in action on Sunday afternoon at Lipscomb in a 2:00 p.m. tip. The game can be heard on 1040 AM WLVJ and www.fausports.com.
