BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) - Kevin Green had 22 points and DeAndre Rice added 19, including a clutch 3-pointer in the final 90 seconds, to help Florida Atlantic beat Campbell 97-88 Tuesday night to complete coach Matt Doherty's return to North Carolina.
Doherty, who left North Carolina in 2003, went 2-0 in his return to the state, adding this one to a victory Sunday over Gardner-Webb. The Owls (8-7, 7-1 Atlantic Sun) pulled into a first-place tie with Kennesaw State by winning their fourth straight.
Jake Wohlfeil made six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points for the Camels (5-10, 4-4), and teammate Ledell Eackles had 11 points and 11 assists. Still, Campbell fell way behind early, a disturbing trend at home for coach Robbie Laing.
FAU shot 72 percent in the first half and led 57-41 at the break, and the margin eventually reached 21 midway through the final 20 minutes. The Owls slowed the pace in the second half as the Camels went on a run cutting the deficit to five points in the final few minutes.
Wohlfeil converted a pair of free throws to cap a 17-2 run, and the Camels trailed only 81-75. They got as close as five points later, but Rice swished a deep 3 with the shot clock winding down to make it 91-83 with 1:18 left.
Green then made 4-of-4 at the line in the final minute to seal it.
Doherty compiled a record of 53-43 in three seasons with the Tar Heels before Roy Williams went on to win the national championship last season with most of the players recruited by Doherty.
Following a two-year layoff, Doherty returned to coaching with the Owls. He has gotten immediate results, with their only A-Sun loss coming at East Tennessee State.
