BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University head women's basketball coach Chancellor Dugan has announced the team's 2005-06 schedule. In their final season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Owls will take part in 20 conference games and seven non-conference games. A-Sun play will also have a new look with the introduction of three new members.
FAU begins its regular season hosting the FAU Tip-Off Classic November 18-19. The Owls face Navy on the 18th before taking on Delaware State on the 19th. Monmouth will round out the four-team field.
Tournament play will continue as FAU will then head to Birmingham, AL, to take part in the Samford/BSC Classic, November 25-26. The Owls face Samford in the first round before closing out against Birmingham-Southern.
Five days later, FAU begins A-Sun play with a two-game homestand against North Florida on Dec. 1 and Jacksonville on Dec. 3. FAU closes out its non-conference schedule in the last half of December with a road game at Bethune-Cookman and home dates with Florida State and Georgetown.
"I'm really looking forward to the upcoming season," said Dugan. "I think our fans will be particularly excited when they see our home schedule. Opening up with our own tournament, as well as hosting teams like Florida State and Georgetown, gives our fans a chance to see the some of the best that college basketball has to offer."
FAU will be among 11 teams competing for the A-Sun title. North Florida, Kennesaw State, and East Tennessee State all begin their first seasons in the conference while UCF, Georgia State, and Troy have left the A-Sun since last year.
The A-Sun Tournament will take place March 9-11 in Dothan, AL. The top eight teams from the regular season qualify for the championship with the winner receiving the A-Sun's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to the regular season, FAU will play exhibitions with Florida Gulf Coast (Nov. 4) and Nova Southeastern (Nov. 11).
The 2005-06 season will be the last for FAU in the A-Sun as the Owls begin play in the Sun Belt Conference in 2006-07.
