Student athletes at Florida Atlantic University invited 25 children from the Pearl City CATS After School Program to the Boca Raton campus to experience a day in the life of a college athlete. The event was part of National Student-Athlete Day.
A tour began in front of the Tom Oxley Athletic Center, the athletic department's hub and a place where many of the 450 student athletes spend their afternoons either in class, study hall, weight room as well locker rooms and coaches' offices. It continued through the main educational and college facilities such as the dorms, classrooms and the University Center.
"It was fun to see how they were learning," said Kelly Hoffman, a women's soccer player and the vice-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. "We could see that most didn't really know what college was, before today".
At the conclusion of the athletic and campus tour, the student-athletes talked to the children about the life long benefits of being both a student and an athlete. The final stop of the tour was the FAU baseball game. The children visited the dugout and participated in the team's pre-game national anthem experience.
