BOILING SPRINGS, NC -- Two first-half goals proved to be too much for the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team as they fell to Gardner-Webb 2-1 on Sunday.
The loss was the first in program history against Gardner-Webb.
The Bulldogs scored just 2:24 into the match as Carlton Hughes converted on a pass from Shane Flippin. They would add an insurance goal in the 20th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
The Owls would draw within one before halftime, as Leonardo De Mata scored on a free kick just inside the left post.
Unfortunately, the offense couldn't sustain any pressure in the second-half, forcing GWU keeper Tyler Kettering to make just one save in the final 45 minutes.
The loss means the Owls slipped into the #4 seed for next week's Atlantic Sun Championship and will face the #5 seed Jacksonville in the opening round. With a victory, they would have finished as the #2 seed and earned a first-round bye.
The game is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. This year's tournament host is Belmont in Macon, GA.
