BIRMINGHAM, AL - Shontavia Williams scored her 1,000th career point at Florida Atlantic University, but MaKenzie Spruiell stole the show in the first half as she connected on five straight triples to give the Samford Bulldogs a 46-26 halftime advantage. The Owls eventually fell to Samford 82-55. Spruiell finished 6-10 from distance for 18 points on the night.
As a team the Bulldogs shot 69 % from the floor in the first session while FAU cashed in on 12-26 attempts from the field for 46 %. The Owls three-point struggles continued as they connected on just 1-7 attempts from three-point land in the first half.
The Bulldogs went to a two-three zone on the defensive end for the majority of the first half, which limited the Owls' ability to establish a consistent inside presence.
The Owls went on a 6-0 run to start the second half, but Samford answered with a 7-0 run of their own and never looked back.
Samford was able to establish a nice offensive rhythm verses the Owls defense as they connected 47.8% of their three pointers.
Susan Beauzil scored a season high nine points on 3-4 of from three-point land. Amanda Bulin added seven points. Shontavia Williams ended with 14 points on 6-18 from the floor. The Owls fell to 0-3 on the year.
Alex Munday poured in 16 points and Tish Pilkerton added 14 for the Bulldogs as they are now 2-1 on the year. Andrea Ward scored 10 off the bench.
FAU will be back in action tomorrow night against Birmingham-Southern. Tip time is set for 6 p.m. eastern.
