BOCA RATON, FL -- The opening weekend of the season didn't go as planned for Florida Atlantic University as it dropped two close games by an average of five points at the FAU Tip-Off Classic.
The Owls lost to Navy 68-64 on Friday evening and fell to Delaware State 65-59 the following night at Broward Community College.
This weekend Florida Atlantic will be traveling to Birmingham, AL to participate in the Samford/BSC Classic. The Owls will take on Samford on Friday, Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. eastern and battle Birmingham-Southern on the 26 at 6 p.m. eastern.
Samford (1-1) and Birmingham-Southern (0-1) locked up on Monday night with the Bulldogs prevailing to a 54-49 win. Veronica Pike led Samford with 17 points on the night and Alex Munday added 12. Munday is averaging 13 points per game on the season.
Britni Ballard led the Panthers with 11 points in the game. Lawanda Young pinched in nine off the bench for BSC.
Senior Shontavia Williams is leading the Owls in scoring as she is knotting 12 points per game. She needs just five points to become the seventh FAU player to record 1,000 career points. Transfer Demina Anderson is providing a nice inside presence for FAU as she is averaging 11 points per game.
This weekend will mark the second stint of back-to-back games for the Owls in the young season. Since FAU entered the A-Sun in the 1994-95 season it has an identical record of 6-10 in both the first and second games of back-to-back situations.
"I think this weekend is going to be a really good test for us. I think its going to be a positive experience and I am looking forward to getting better everyday," head coach Chancellor Dugan said.
