BOCA RATON, FL -- The final week of the regular season has come for the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team.
Their next and most important game in terms of a regular season championship is scheduled for Thursday at 7:30 p.m., against Kennesaw State. KSU (11-2-1, 7-1-0 A-SUN) is directly behind FAU (12-3-1, 7-0-1 A-SUN) in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
The two schools are alike in many more ways than just their nickname (KSU is also known as the Owls). They are 1-2 in nearly every major statistical category within the A-Sun, the lone exception being assists (both are top three).
The mind boggling statistic is that these two teams have combined to post 22 shutouts on the year, with FAU holding the edge 12-10. While FAU has shared the net between Jessica Badders and Megan Coyne, KSU keeper Jessica Marek has played every minute in net. She has a goals-against-average of 0.56 and all 10 of Kennesaw's shutouts.
Megan Coyne and Jessica Badders have shared the net in all but four games this season. Coyne has two shutouts of her own, but the pair has shared the remaining 10. Both keepers are among the A-Sun's best in terms of goals against, with Coyne leading the way at 0.118. Badders has posted a very sharp 0.88 GAA of her own, especially when you consider she is a true freshman.
The regular season will wrap up on Sunday, as the Owls travel to ETSU for a 1 p.m. start. ETSU features the high-powered duo of Erin Ashton (10g, 6a) and Emily Fulcher (7g). FAU will need to crank up its defense in the finale to hold the tandem in check and go into the A-Sun Championship on a high note.
The A-Sun Championship is scheduled for Nov. 3-5 in Boiling Springs, NC. If FAU finishes in first or second in the conference standings, they will receive a bye in the first round.
