The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team will close out the regular season this week. The squad travels to Florida International on Tuesday before returning home and honoring its seniors on Saturday against Arkansas State at 4 pm.
FIU has struggled this season with a 3-20 record. When the Owls hosted the Golden Panthers earlier this season, FAU needed five games to defeat FIU after winning the first two games.
Dropping its last four matches in conference play, FIU will use Tuesday's match as a tuneup for Arkansas State on Friday. The Golden Panthers are led by Anna Dmowska's 228 kills and Alyse Santisi's 252 digs. The offense is run by freshman Dyionna Smith with 721 assists.
Arkansas State will travel to Boca Raton on Saturday for the team's first meeting with FAU. A future Sun Belt opponent for the Owls, the Indian hold a 23-7 record and first in the East Division of the SBC.
The team is led by Giedre Tarnauskaite's 444 kills (4.27 kills/game). As a team, the Indians record two more kills than there opponents per game. Katie Peil runs the offense and averages 9.74 assists per game with a total of 1052 assists. Defensively, Tessa Millikan has picked up 419 digs with two additional players, Tarnauskaite and Caitlyn Mitchell, adding over 300. The team is currently ranked third in the SBC with 3.64 blocks per game. Three players on the squad have shut down their opponents over 90 times.
On Saturday, FAU (20-5, 9-1 A-Sun) will honor Lindsey Bell and Cayse Kaveny in their final match at FAU Gym. Bell has been with the program for four years has helped guide the program to the 2004 Atlantic Sun Conferenc title. Kaveny a transfer for the Owls has been a huge part of the offense the last two seasons and picked up A-Sun Player-of-the-Week earlier this year.
FAU holds the no. 1 seed heading into the A-Sun Tournament November 19-20 in Orlando.
