Danielle Castro Named to Soccer America Team

Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team received accolades Thursday afternoon as defender Danielle Castro was named to the Soccer America Team-of-the-Week. Castro, only the second player to be named to Soccer America Team-of-the-Week at FAU (Julie Ferguson), has played a pivotal role in the team's 3-0 start and No. 7 ranking in the Southeast Region.
The senior from Zephyrhills, FL scored her second career game-winning goal, from 45-yards out, five minutes into overtime to defeat Loyola (Md.) 2-1 in the Lady Owls season opener. Castro followed that performance up by helping FAU shut out no. 25 Indian 1-0 in the two teams first ever meeting and defeating the University of Miami 2-1 for the second-consecutive year. Against Miami, Castro tied the FAU record for all-time games played with 62.
The Lady Owls now head to Evanston, IL to take on Northwestern University (0-2-0) and the University of Minnesota (1-0-1) in the Wildcat Classic. A pair of freshmen, Christina Chang and Cristina Rodriguez, lead the FAU scoring attack. Chang, who leads the team with two goals, scored her first collegiate game-winning goal in the 2-1 victory against UM and Rodriguez assisted on the game-tying goal against Loyola (Md.) and the opening goal against Miami.
On defense, FAU is led by fine play of Krista Fine, Castro and goalkeeper Molly Keating. Keating, the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player-of-the-Week, has posted a 3-0 record, a 0.65 goals-against average on 17 saves and one shutout. Fine has completely shut down opposing teams lead scorers.
FAU returns home to play Charleston Southern, 7pm, Friday, September 12. Season ticket packages can still be purchased.
